What installing one involves

These are plumbed systems, not appliances you unbox and plug in. Knowing that before delivery is the difference between a good first day and a callout.

The inside of an open cabinet under a sink: a chrome drain trap, two shut-off valves and an otherwise empty shelf.

An under-sink installation taps the cold-water supply at the angle stop, runs the feed into the unit, takes the purified water to its own dispensing point, and sends the concentrate to the drain. None of that is difficult, and all of it is plumbing.

What the room needs

  • A cold-water connection with enough pressure. See the minimum for the model you are fitting.
  • A drain connection for the concentrate line.
  • Somewhere for the purified water to come out: a dedicated faucet drilled into the sink or worktop on the tank models, or the ZenJar on the counter on the models that dispense to a carafe.
  • Space under the counter for the unit and, where fitted, the pressure tank.

Why the ZenJar models are the easier fit

The models that dispense to a ZenJar need no pressure tank, which frees most of the cupboard and removes the bulkiest part of the job. That is why they suit a rented kitchen or a laboratory bench.
